Food allergies: FreeFrom awards shortlist announced
If you have food allergies, finding quality brands that suit your needs is not always easy. The annual FreeFrom Food Awards seeks to honour the very best in gluten-free, dairy-free, egg-free foods for coeliacs and allergy sufferers.
Now 170 foods have been chosen to go on the 2012 shortlist.? “We had some fantastically interesting entries this year,” said Michelle Berriedale-Johnson, editor of FoodsMatter.com, who chairs the judging sessions.
Foods include indulgent goodies such as cakes, cup cakes, brownies and chocolates, as well as super-healthy products in a new raw food and superfood category. Items on the shortlist to look out for in the supermarket include Farabella gluten-free pasta grains; inSpiral dehydrated purple corn kale chips; Foodamentalists gluten free raised pork pie; Food Heaven dairy and gluten free 'cheesecake'; andFoodswild Cornish Stinger Nettle Beer.
The judges included professional foodies, dietitians and nutritionists, coeliacs and allergy sufferers and, from the blogosphere, a dozen or so keen freefrom and gluten-free bloggers. The winners of the 2012 FreeFrom Food Awards will be announced by Antony Worrall Thompson at West India Dock on April 17.
