Pomegranate 'may prove key to slowing down ageing process'

Monday, 14 November 2011 4:07 PM

Pomegranate provides such an anti-oxidant boost that regular consumption may even slow the ageing process, according to a £2million study. The secret of youth has been sought for centuries - could this unassuming fruit provide the answer?

Scientists in Spain found pomegranate extract can slow down the deterioration of DNA by guarding against DNA oxidation. DNA in cells forms the blueprint for subsequent cellular production. If a cell’s DNA is damaged, the cells that it creates when it splits are exact replicas and so the damaged DNA is passed on.

The team used a potent new type of pomegranate extract that includes for the first time the punicalagins or antioxidants from the skin, pith and seeds of the fruit. The patented extract, Pomanox, used in the study is now on sale in capsule form (PurePlus) in the UK and has been added exclusively to pomegranate juice drinks sold by PomeGreat.

“We get old because we fall apart, cell by cell. One way to look at ageing is to think of it as rusting or oxidizing, a damaging process,” said Dr Sergio Streitenberger, head of research at Probeltebio in Spain.
