Christmas treats hit the supermarkets
Is it that time already? Mince pies, puddings, cakes, Yule logs hit the shops this week as Britain braces itself for another Christmas eating extravaganza. It is predicted we will eat more than one million mince pies by the end of December, according to figures from Tesco.
Last year, Tesco sold nearly 3000 Christmas cakes and Yule logs plus 6000 Christmas puddings in the first week of September.
They have expanded their luxury range to this year include mince pies with Courvoisier Cognac, luxury mincemeat, Mediterranean sultanas and raisins, Vostizza currants and Amarena glace cherries.
Tesco mince pie expert Kim Hesketh said: “Mince pies sales are very much driven by cold weather and the further the temperature drops in the run up to Christmas, the higher the sales.
“With the current gloomy weather and heavy rainfall we've seen across much of Britain, this year we predict a 10% rise in first week sales.”
