British Cheddar is sthe nation’s favourite cheese at Christmas time, a new survey by The Dairy Council has revealed.

More than three quarters of people questioned said they would be eating Cheddar this festive season. With 76%, cheddar iss almost twice as popular as Wensleydale (38%), Stilton (42%) and British Brie (35%).

Men and women were very similar in their tastes except for Stilton which was more popular with males – 46% compared to 39%.

Dr Judith Bryans, director of The Dairy Council, says: “We are pleased that people will be enjoying British cheeses during this festive season, regardless of the type. While British Cheddar is certainly a worthy choice as the nation’s favourite this Christmas, people might be surprised to know that Britain produces more varieties of cheese than France.”

The survey also revealed that most people had eating their cheese with pickle (46%) followed by chutney (38%) and grapes/fruit (38%).

Not surprisingly wine was the favoured drink while eating cheese (50%) followed by port/spirits at 32% and tea/coffee at 28%.

According to The Dairy Council, with cheese naturally containing a variety of important nutrients including calcium, protein, and a number of vitamins and minerals, it is a valuable, versatile and nutritious addition to a healthy balanced diet and lifestyle.
