Oily fish contains essential omega 3 and omega 6, which have a wealth of health benefits, including brain development.

However it can sometimes be difficult to work the recommendation two portions of oily fish per week into your family meal plans.

British asparagus comes into season from May to July and is the perfect accompaniment to oily fish. The British Trout Association has come up with a series of recipes that match trout with seasonal ingredients such as asparagus to encourage Brits to be more adventurous with their fish.

Trout is lower in calories than many other oily fish, including salmon and mackerel. It is available in supermarkets, independent fishmongers, farm shops and delicatessens across the country as whole fish, fillets, hot smoked or cold smoked.

Trout and asparagus pie includes crisp filo pastry topping with layers of trout, ricotta cheese, asparagus and mushrooms – the recipe is available to download online.
